Durante la Reuni\u00f3n Anual de 2024 de la Asociaci\u00f3n de \u00c1rboles Frutales del Estado de Washington, celebrada en Yakima, conversamos con Apolinar, quien en ese momento trabajaba en el departamento de recursos humanos de una destacada empresa frut\u00edcola. Adem\u00e1s, participaba activamente en el Programa de Educaci\u00f3n para Empleados Hispanos de Huertos, ofrecido por Wenatchee Valley College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conociendo a Apolinar Blanco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Apolinar Blanco, hijo de Apolinar y Margarita Blanco, se crio en Chelan, Washington, rodeado por el paisaje agr\u00edcola del centro del estado. Estudi\u00f3 en Wenatchee Valley College, donde obtuvo dos t\u00edtulos de Asociado en Ciencias T\u00e9cnicas: uno en sostenibilidad y agricultura org\u00e1nica, y otro en horticultura y producci\u00f3n de \u00e1rboles frutales. Conocido cari\u00f1osamente como “Apol” entre sus amigos, actualmente vive en East Wenatchee con su esposo Cory. Se desempe\u00f1a como gerente de sostenibilidad y responsabilidad social de Chelan Fresh.

\u00bfC\u00f3mo te iniciaste en la agricultura y cu\u00e1l es tu funci\u00f3n actual en el sector?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

De ni\u00f1o, mis padres siempre nos inculcaron a mis hermanos y a m\u00ed la importancia de cultivar nuestros propios alimentos. Sin embargo, no descubr\u00ed mi verdadera pasi\u00f3n por la agricultura hasta que me un\u00ed a la Organizaci\u00f3n Nacional FFA durante la preparatoria. En mi \u00faltimo a\u00f1o, fui elegido presidente estatal de la FFA, lo que me permiti\u00f3 conocer distintos aspectos de la industria agr\u00edcola en todo el estado, mientras mi inter\u00e9s y compromiso con el sector se profundizaban. Con el paso de tiempo, he comprendido que mi vocaci\u00f3n est\u00e1 en la industria de los \u00e1rboles frutales. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Como gerente de sostenibilidad y responsabilidad social en Chelan Fresh, lidero y coordino nuestros esfuerzos para operar de manera ambientalmente sostenible, socialmente responsable y econ\u00f3micamente viable. Mi funci\u00f3n principal consiste en garantizar que nuestras operaciones respalden el bienestar de los trabajadores, fomentar pr\u00e1cticas laborales \u00e9ticas y fortalecer la participaci\u00f3n comunitaria. Adem\u00e1s, trabajo en estrecha colaboraci\u00f3n con nuestros productores, socios y equipos internos para desarrollar e implementar iniciativas que reduzcan nuestra huella ambiental, como la conservaci\u00f3n del agua, la salud del suelo, la eficiencia energ\u00e9tica y el envasado sostenible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfC\u00f3mo ve la evoluci\u00f3n de la industria?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

He estado pensando durante a\u00f1os sobre esta pregunta. Creo que el sector de la fruta de \u00e1rbol evolucionar\u00e1 hacia una producci\u00f3n tecnol\u00f3gicamente mejorada, con un enfoque ecol\u00f3gico y socialmente responsable. La evoluci\u00f3n se enfocar\u00e1 en \u00e1reas clave como la agricultura regenerativa, la innovaci\u00f3n sostenible, la automatizaci\u00f3n inteligente, la resiliencia frente al cambio clim\u00e1tico, la diversificaci\u00f3n del mercado y el liderazgo \u00e9tico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00bfEs suficiente desarrollar tecnolog\u00eda m\u00e1s sofisticada para abordar los desaf\u00edos que enfrenta la industria agr\u00edcola?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

La industria est\u00e1 acelerando la adopci\u00f3n de pr\u00e1cticas como la agricultura regenerativa, la inteligencia artificial y la rob\u00f3tica en el campo. Tambi\u00e9n se est\u00e1 diversificando en los mercados para compensar los desaf\u00edos laborales y comerciales, e invirtiendo en soluciones gen\u00e9ticas y agroecol\u00f3gicas para afrontar la volatilidad clim\u00e1tica.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sin embargo, creo firmemente que tambi\u00e9n debemos ser l\u00edderes en \u00e9tica: defender la seguridad de los trabajadores, garantizar la equidad en los beneficios y promover la transparencia en la cadena de suministro.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We met Apolinar at the 2024 Washington State Tree Fruit Association Annual Meeting in Yakima, Washington, when he was working in human resources for a large fruit company and also enrolled in the Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program at Wenatchee Valley College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Getting to know Apolinar Blanco<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Apolinar Blanco, son of Apolinar and Margarita Blanco, was raised in Chelan, Washington. He has earned two Associate of Technical Science degrees from Wenatchee Valley College: one in sustainability and organic agriculture, the other in horticulture and tree fruit production. Known by his friends as \u201cApol,\u201d this native of Central Washington currently lives in East Wenatchee with husband Cory and is the sustainability and social responsibility manager for Chelan Fresh.\u202f<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How did you get your start in agriculture and what is your role in the industry now? <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a kid, my parents always taught my siblings and me the importance of growing and raising our own food. However, I didn\u2019t realize I truly had a passion for agriculture until I joined the National FFA Organization in high school. In my senior year, I was elected FFA State President and was able to see different aspects of the agricultural industry around the state as my knowledge and passion for agriculture deepened. Throughout the years, I have come to realize that the tree fruit industry is where I was meant to be. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the sustainability and social responsibility manager at Chelan Fresh, I\u2019m responsible for leading and coordinating our efforts to operate in an environmentally sustainable, socially responsible and economically viable way. My role involves ensuring our operations support worker well-being, ethical labor practices and community engagement. I also work closely with our growers, partners and internal teams to develop and implement initiatives that reduce our environmental footprint, such as water conservation, soil health, energy efficiency and sustainable packaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you see the industry changing?\u202f <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This question is one that I have been thinking about a lot over the years. I see the tree fruit industry evolving toward technology-enhanced, eco-conscious and socially responsive production. Putting emphasis on areas like regenerative ag, sustainable innovation, smart automation, climate resilience, market diversification and ethical leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is better technology enough to address the challenges faced by the ag\u202findustry?<\/em><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The industry is accelerating adoption of regenerative ag, AI and robotics in the field, diversifying across markets to offset labor and trade challenges, and investing in genetic and agroecological solutions to navigate climate volatility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yet, I truly believe that we must also lead on ethics \u2014 championing worker safety, equitable benefits and supply chain transparency.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
