Journalist Helen Patricia Hagood, who wrote for Good Fruit Grower during the 1970s, died in Springfield, Oregon, on September 13. She was 89.
Hagood was born in Dixonville, Oregon. After graduating from Roseburg High School, she attended Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon, where she was the first female editor of the college newspaper, The Barometer.
She married fellow OSC student Melvin Hagood of Ontario, Oregon, in 1944. They were lifelong partners and traveled to many places around the world before he died in 2007.
During her career as a journalist, she wrote for many publications, including the OSU News Bureau, the Washington State University News Bureau, newspapers in Washington State, the Washington Farmer, and Good Fruit Grower. Her belief in the freedom of the press made her a fearless reporter. She was a member of the Washington Press Women and the National Federation of Press Women.
She is survived by her children, Diane Kenderesi and Nancy Hagood of Corvallis; Cathy Hagood of Seattle, Washington; and Mike Hagood of Idaho Falls, Idaho.
