The Washington Apple Education Foundation recently welcomed back Jennifer Witherbee as the organization’s executive director. Witherbee stepped down in 2021, after leading the organization for more than 20 years.
The association’s board announced Witherbee’s return in February, following a formal search for an executive director after Faviola Barbosa left the role in December. The board also recognized longtime WAEF staff members Xochitl Velazquez, Jamie Brunner and Brenda Avina for their dedication to the organization’s mission and the students it serves.
“I am thrilled to return as the executive director of WAEF,” Witherbee said in a statement. “After three years away, it is an honor to once again support the incredible students, donors, volunteers and industry partners who make WAEF such a powerful force. The passion and generosity of tree fruit industry members and supporters has always been at the heart of the foundation, and it is inspiring to see the continued dedication to helping students achieve their college dreams.”
In 2024, the Washington Apple Education Foundation awarded 387 scholarships — totaling more than $1.2 million — to students with ties to the tree fruit industry. For more information about WAEF, visit: waef.org.
