¿Disfruta trabajar en la huerta?

Antes trabajaba en el empaque. Pensaba que me sentaría más libre en el campo y disfrutar la naturaleza. ¡Pero no, no hay tiempo de verla!

¿Cuáles son sus responsabilidades? 

Soy el encargado de programación en el campo. Manejo un sistema automatizado; es más eficiente. Quiero seguir en el sector y mantenerme al día. Por suerte, no tengo problemas con las computadoras. No todos tuvimos las mismas oportunidades cuando éramos jóvenes, y sin ese contacto desde chico es difícil aprender.

¿Como ve la industria, de aquí al futuro?

Tecnológicamente avanzando, pero no creo que mejore económicamente. Sí, va a ser mejor que ahora por las nuevas tecnologías. En cuanto a los trabajadores, cada persona tiene su sueño. Las compañías grandes van comprando todo y la gente va perdiendo las ganas.

In December 2025, during the annual meeting of the Washington State Fruit Tree Association held in Wenatchee, we spoke with Gerber, of Rock Island, an irrigation assistant with Zirkle Fruit Co. and a student in the HOEEP (Hispanic Orchard Employee Education Program) at Wenatchee Valley College.

Getting to know Gerber Rivera

Do you enjoy working in the orchards?

I used to work in packaging. I thought I would feel freer in the fields and enjoy nature. But no, there’s no time to see it!

What are your responsibilities?

I’m in charge of irrigation scheduling. I operate an automated system, it’s more efficient. I want to stay in the industry and keep up to date. Fortunately, I have no problems with computers. Not all of us had the same opportunities when we were young. Without exposure as a young person, it’s difficult to learn.

How do you see the industry moving forward?

Technologically, it’s advancing, but it’s not going to improve much economically. It will be better than now because of new technology. As for the workers, each person has their dream. Big companies are buying everything, and people are losing enthusiasm.
