    San Juan Islands group works to revive historic apple industry through hard cider.

    Before irrigation systems were built in the state’s arid center, the San Juan Islands were Washington’s hub of apple production. Today, an environmental nonprofit is trying to put some of those heritage trees to work by developing an island-grown cider industry. It’s working, just not exactly the way they expected.
