Stink bugs a foul foe

Size class shifts tell the story: Deficit irrigation during the summer works to reduce bitter pit incidence in Honeycrisp by shifting the size classes harvested from 38 percent fruit in box size 56 or lower to 24 percent. Box size 80 fruit increased from 14 percent to 32 percent. Since larger fruit are more prone to bitter pit, this shift in the size class of the harvest reduces the overall rates of bitter pit in the crop, said Lee Kalcsits, Washington State University physiologist. The positive results shown are for middle- and late-summer water stress, lasting about a month long, but early-season deficits did not show benefits.
