California removed nearly 40,000 acres of wine grapes in the past year, according to an acreage report released Nov. 4.
The report, published by the California Association of Winegrape Growers identified 477,475 existing acres as of August 2025, with 38,134 acres removed between October 2024 and August 2025.
The data was compiled with statewide spatial mapping by Land IQ of Sacramento and includes acreage by county, crush district and American Viticultural Area, according to a news release from the association. The mapping system uses advanced remote sensing, artificial intelligence and on-the-ground field verification.
“This mapping gives us a new level of spatial accuracy, showing what’s actually planted and where,” association president Natalie Collins said in the release.
