Washington State University entomologist Stanley Hoyt shares how insects develop resistance to insecticides, alongside a whimsical illustration from Yakima artist John Freeborn. “As the insecticide is used over and over, the susceptible individuals are killed, leaving an ever-increasing percentage of resistant insects to interbreed and carry on the population. Soon, the population cannot be controlled by the insecticide, and it is termed resistant.”
