Poland's American connection

Poland's apple industry adopted U.S. technologies and varieties during the Soviet era.

Poland’s number-one apple variety, Idared, is a legacy from an educational exchange between Poland and the United States that began during the Communist era. Dr. Augustyn Mika, professor at the Research Institute of Pomology and Floriculture in Skierniewice, said that after the Second World War, when Poland was part of the Soviet bloc, the country was completely cut off from the West. “In the 1950s, you could go to prison if you had some correspondence with a Western country,” he recalled. “It was forbidden to have any contact with an embassy in a western country.
